Here's a question I've always wanted to know but have never asked..."what does YMCA stand for?". We all know the song by the over the top costumed group The Village People, but I doubt many of us even know the history of "The Y" or even what the acronym stood for.
We'll here's the story. The YMCA actually stands for The Young Men's Christian Association. It was founded by George Williams on June 6, 1844 in London England. It was an organization that was trying to instill the christian way of life into people's regular lives. The Y became a sanctuary for people who lived in slums and on the streets of London. The YMCA's genorosity became widely known and it also started to transcend it's initial goal of guiding people towards a more christian life. The organization would soon become a place for social development and would invite any gender, race and religion to participate in it's activities.
So there you have it, the basic histoy of The YMCA!
